Abortion, Anti-

Deu 30:19

I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live. [KJV: “choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.”]

Psa 139:15-16

15 My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

16 Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.

Jer 1:5

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.

q     Abortion is murder—

Jer 20:14-18

14 Cursed be the day in which I was born! Let the day not be blessed in which my mother bore me!

15 Let the man be cursed who brought news to my father, saying, A male child has been born to you! Making him very glad.

16 And let that man be like the cities which Yahweh overthrew, and did not relent; Let him hear the cry in the morning and the shouting at noon,

17 Because he did not kill me from the womb, that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb always enlarged with me.

18 Why did I come forth from the womb to see labor and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?

q     A story:

A worried woman went to her gynecologist and said, “Doctor, I have a serious problem and desperately need your help! My baby is not even 1 yr. old and I’m pregnant again. I don’t want kids so close together.”

So the doctor said, “Ok, and what do you want me to do?”

She said, “I want you to end my pregnancy, and I’m counting on your help with this.”

The doctor thought for a little, and after some silence he said to the lady, “I think I have a better solution for your problem. It’s less dangerous for you too.”

She smiled, thinking that the doctor was going to accept her request.

Then he continued, “You see, in order for you not to have to take care of 2 babies at the same time, let’s kill the one in your arms. This way, you could rest some before the other one is born. If we’re going to kill one of them, it doesn’t matter which one it is. There would be no risk for your body if you chose the one in your arms.”

The lady was horrified and said, “No doctor! How terrible! It’s a crime to kill a child!”

“I agree,” the doctor replied. “But you seemed to be ok with it, so I thought maybe that was the best solution.” The doctor smiled, realizing that he had made his point.

He convinced the mom that there is no difference in killing a child that’s already been born and one that’s still in the womb. The crime is the same!

q     Mother’s life, no abortion—

Gen 35:16-20

16 Then they journeyed from Bethel. And when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel labored in childbirth, and she had hard labor.

17 Now it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her, Do not fear; you will have this son also.

18 And so it was, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-Oni; but his father called him Benjamin.

19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).

20 And Jacob set a pillar on her grave, which is the pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day.

q     Rape, no abortion—

Deu 22:25-29

25 But if a man finds a betrothed young woman in the countryside, and the man forces her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die.

26 But you shall do nothing to the young woman; there is in the young woman no sin deserving of death, for just as when a man rises against his neighbor and kills him, even so is this matter.

27 For he found her in the countryside, and the betrothed young woman cried out, but there was no one to save her.

28 If a man finds a young woman who is a virgin, who is not betrothed, and he seizes her and lies with her, and they are found out,

29 then the man who lay with her shall give to the young woman’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife because he has humbled her; he shall not be permitted to divorce her all his days.

Exo 22:16-17

16 If a man entices a virgin who is not betrothed, and lies with her, he shall surely pay the bride-price for her to be his wife.

17 If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money according to the bride-price of virgins.

q     Injury to a Pregnant Woman—

Exo 21:22-25

22 If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, yet no harm follows, he shall surely be punished accordingly as the woman’s husband imposes on him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.

23 But if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life,

24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

25 burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

Cp. Lev 24:17

Whoever kills any man shall surely be put to death.

“Abstain from every form [KJV: “all appearance] of evil” (1 Th 5:22).

“… a little leaven leavens the whole lump”

1 Cor 5:6-7

6 Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?

7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Messiah, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.

“…all have sinned, and come short of the glory of Yahweh” (Rom 3:23 KJV; also see v 10).

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of Yahweh, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Tim 3:16).

“…all things work together for good to those who love Yahweh, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (Rom 8:28).

“… all Your commandments are truth” (Psa 119.151).

Anger

q     “Be angry, and do not sin: do not let the sun go down on your wrath” (Eph 4:26).

q     “Make no friendship with an angry man” (Pro 22:24a).

q     “A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger” (Pro 15:1).

Animals, Humane Treatment of

q     “A righteous man regards the life of his animal, but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel” (Pro 12:10 NKJV).

q     “A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel” (Pro 12:10 NIV).

q     “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain” (Deu 25:4).

“… as for me and my house, we will serve Yahweh” (Jos 24:15).

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold” (Pro 22:1).

“A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger” (Pro 15:1).

-B-

Backsliding is Possible:

Pro 14:14

The backslider in heart will be filled with his own ways, but a good man will be satisfied from above.

Eze 33:18-19
18 When the righteous turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, he shall die because of it.
19 But when the wicked turns from his wickedness and does what is lawful and right, he shall live because of it.

Mat 24:13
But he who endures to the end shall be saved.

Mar 13:13

And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end shall be saved.

1 Cor 9:27

But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.

1 Cor 10:12

Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.

1 Cor 15:1-2

1 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand,

2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you; unless you believed in vain.

Gal 5:4

You have become estranged from Messiah, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.

Gal 6:9

And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.

Heb 3:6, 14

6 But Messiah as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.

14 For we have become partakers of Messiah if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end.

Heb 6:4-6

4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit,

5 and have tasted the good word of Yahweh and the powers of the age to come,

6 if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of Yahweh, and put Him to an open shame.

2 Pet 2:20-22

20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Master and Savior Yeshua Messiah, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning.

21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them.

22 But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: A dog returns to his own vomit, and, a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire.

2 Pet 3:17-18
17 You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked;
18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Master and Savior Yeshua Messiah. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.

Beam (or NKJV: plank) in eye (Mat 7:5; Luk 6:42).

Be anxious for nothing:

Phi 4:6-7

6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to Yahweh;

7 and the peace of Yahweh, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Messiah Yeshua.

Bereavement

q     “Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Pet 5:7).

q     “I can do all things through Messiah who strengthens me” (Phi 4:13).

q     1 Th 4:13-18

For more context, see vv 8-10:

Eph 2:8-10 (NKJV)

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of Yahweh,

9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

10 For we are His workmanship, created in Messiah Yeshua for good works, which Yahweh prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

“…by the law is the knowledge of sin” (Rom 3:20b; also see Rom 7:7; 1 Joh 3:4).

Cannot look upon sin

Hab 1:13a

You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, and cannot look on wickedness.

Clean & Unclean – Scriptural Dietary Law

q     Mar 7:19 because it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and is eliminated, thus purifying all foods?

q     Mat 15:20 These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.

q     Acts 10:10-16 – Peter’s Vision
Peter’s vision was given to show him that he should not call any man common or unclean. Thus, what Yahweh has cleansed (i.e., the men, not the animals), Peter was not to call common or unclean. See vv 28-29:
28 Then he [Peter] said to them [Cornelius and company], “You know how unlawful it is for a Jewish man to keep company with or go to one of another nation. But Yahweh has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean.
29 Therefore I came without objection as soon as I was sent for. I ask, then, for what reason have you sent for me?”

“… Come out of her, my people…” (Rev 18:4).

“… commandments are not burdensome” (NKJV) [KJV: “grievous”] (1 Joh 5:3).

Commandments impossible to keep? Not so:

Rev 14:12

Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of Yahweh and the faith of Yeshua.

Commandments, see Law / Commandments

“... Condescend to men of low estate …” (Rom 12:16 KJV)

Rom 12:16 NKJV

Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.

Dead, State of the

q     At death, man returns to dust (Gen 3:19; Ecc 3:20), and the spirit (or breath of life) returns to the Mighty One who gave it (Gen 2:7; Ecc 12:7).

q     “The dead know nothing” (Ecc 9:5). Also see Psa 6:5; 146:4b; Isa 38:18-19.

q     Referred to as being asleep [Deu 31:16 (Moses); 2 Sam 7:12 (David) cp Acts 2:29, 34; 13:36; Job 3:11-19; 14:1-15; Psa 13:3; Joh 11:11-26 (Lazarus); 1 Th 4:13-14]

“… depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!” (Mat 7:23).

Delight yourself in Yahweh

Psa 37:4-5

4 Delight yourself also in Yahweh, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.

5 Commit your way to Yahweh, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.

Destroyed for lack of knowledge (Hos 4:6).

Devil “…was a murderer from the beginning…” (Joh 8:44).

“… do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith” (Gal 6:10).

Do not think that I came to destroy the law –

Mat 5:17-18 (see notes under Law / Commandments)

17 Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.

18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.

Don’t forsake “... the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some …” (Heb 10:25).

“Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we stablish the law” (Rom 3:31).

Draught for the word of Yahweh – actually “famine”—

·        H7458. ra'ab, raw-awb'; from H7456; hunger (more or less extensive):--dearth, famine, + famished, hunger.

·        Amo 8:11
Behold, the days are coming, says the Master Yahweh, that I will send a famine on the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of Yahweh.

-E-

Eating swine’s flesh –

Isa 66:16-17

16 For by fire and by His sword Yahweh will judge all flesh; And the slain of Yahweh shall be many.

17 Those who sanctify themselves and purify themselves, to go to the gardens after an idol in the midst, eating swine’s flesh and the abomination and the mouse, shall be consumed together, says Yahweh.

·        This is when Yahweh judges all flesh by fire – has this occurred yet? – No.

Elohim can be singular, and is singular when used in reference to the Almighty—

Psa 86:10 (Yahweh alone is Elohim)

For You are great, and do wondrous things; You alone are Elohim.

Please ask yourself this question: “What does alone mean?”

Cp Joh 17:3

And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true Elohim, and Yeshua Messiah whom You have sent.

“… evil communications corrupt good manners” (1 Cor 15:33 KJV).

q     1 Cor 15:33 NKJV
Do not be deceived: Evil company corrupts good habits.

“Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Yeshua Messiah is in you?; unless indeed you are disqualified” (2 Cor 13:5).

“Exhort [3870 parakaleo: to call near…] one another daily, while it is called ‘Today,’ lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin” (Heb 3:13).

-F-

Faith

q     “Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law” (Rom 3:31).

Faith without works is dead (see Jam 2:8-26, esp. vv 17, 20, 26).

“famine … of hearing the words of Yahweh” (Amos 8:11).

Amo 8:11

Behold, the days are coming, says the Master Yahweh, That I will send a famine on the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of Yahweh.

q     1 Cor 16:8

Few find the way – “Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it” (Mat 7:14).

“Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses” (1 Tim 6:12).

“… Forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead” (Phi 3:13b).

Forgiveness

Fret not because of evildoers (Psa 37:1-9, esp. vv 1 & 7).

Fruit Inspection (Mat 7:16).

Fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22-23).

-G-

Gives His spirit to those who obey Him (Acts 5:32).

Good Cheer – “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (Joh 16:33).

Grace

q     We are saved by grace, not of works (Eph 2:8-9). That is, we have sinned, and fallen short (Rom 3:23), and we are not capable of redeeming ourselves.

q     However, the very fact that we have been delivered from sin shows that we are to no longer continue therein. “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?” (Rom 6:1)

q     We should remain repentant from sin.

q     Eph 2:10 goes on to tell us that we have been “…created in Messiah Yeshua for good works, which Yahweh prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

q     What works did Yahweh prepare beforehand that we should walk in them? – The answer: the keeping of His commandments.

Grow in grace and knowledge – “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Master and Savior Yeshua Messiah. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen” (2 Pet 3:18).

-H-

Hand Washing in Yahweh’s Law: “And whomever the one who has the discharge touches, and has not rinsed his hands in water, he shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening” (Lev 15:11).

“…Holy Spirit whom Yahweh has given to those who obey Him” (Acts 5:32).

“Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear Yahweh. Honor the king” (1 Pet 2:17).

Compare—

1 Joh 2:6

He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

Are to walk differently than He did, or are we “to walk just as He walked”?

“I have come in my Father’s name…” (Joh 5:43a).

“…I would not have known sin except through the law” (Rom 7:7; also see Rom 3:20; 1 Joh 3:4)

“… if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed” (Gal 1:9; also see v 8).

“Is the law then against the promises of Yahweh? Certainly not!” (Gal 3:21a).

Itching ears – “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers” (2 Tim 4:3; cp. Isa 30:9-10).

Jehovah’s Witnesses:

q     Question: If you had the Watchtower in one hand and the Bible in the other, and they conflicted, which would you take?

q     1914 Generation Doctrine

Conversation on 10/17/2013 with a JW named Sylvia—

A person needed to be old enough to know right from wrong in order to be counted in the generation alive in 1914. She stated this to be about 8 years old. (1914 – 8 = c. 1906)

q     Against going “Door-to-Door”:

Teaching all nations does not mean that each individual must span the globe (or span neighborhoods knocking on doors). Rather, it is a collective effort, which can include being a good witness in your workplace, your relationships with your fellowman, etc.

Judging:

q     Mat 7:1
Judge not, that you be not judged.

q     Yet, later, in this same chapter, we are instructed to be fruit inspectors (see vv 15-20). We are told, “Beware of false prophets…” (v 15), and that we will “know them [i.e., we will be able to make a judgment call or a discernment] by their fruits” (v 16).

q     Also notice that vv 3-5 give us even more context and seem to clear up the matter by letting us know that we are not to do this in hypocrisy. As long as we don’t have a beam in our own eye, Yeshua doesn’t seem to offer any condemnation for us trying to remove a fault from our brother’s eye, but, rather, he states, “… then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

q     Yeshua, the same teacher as in Mat 7, also tell us in Joh 7:24, “Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”

q     The Apostle John also advises in 1 Joh 4:1, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of Yahweh; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

q     The writer of Hebrews tell us, “But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil” (Heb 5:14).

q     Also notice Joh 12:48-50. If we are simply agreeing with and upholding what the word has established, the judgment between right and wrong has already been made by the word.

Law / Commandments

q     Paul himself answered the much-debated question of today, “Do we then make void the law through faith?”, as plain and as strong as words can express it—

Rom 3:31

Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.

q     Loving our Maker—

1 Joh 5:2-3

2 By this we know that we love the children of Yahweh, when we love Yahweh and keep His commandments.

3 For this is the love of Yahweh, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome [KJV: “grievous”].

q     Yeshua did not come to destroy the Law or the Prophets (Mat 5:17-18)—

Mat 5:17-18

17 Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill [4137 pleroo].

18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle [2762 keraia] will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.

·        Strong’s:
4137. pleroo, play-ro'-o; from G4134; to make replete, i.e. (lit.) to cram (a net), level up (a hollow), or (fig.) to furnish (or imbue, diffuse, influence), satisfy, execute (an office), finish (a period or task), verify (or coincide with a prediction), etc.:--accomplish, X after, (be) complete, end, expire, fill (up), fulfil, (be, make) full (come), fully preach, perfect, supply.

·        replete (from merriam-webster.com): “1: fully or abundantly provided or filled.”

·        4137 from Thayer’s Greek Lexicon (PC Study Bible Library, © 2000 by Biblesoft):
“Universally and absolutely, to fulfil, i. e. to cause God’s will (as made known in the law) to be obeyed as it should be, and God’s promises (given through the prophets) to receive fulfillment: Matt 5:17.”

·        If “fulfill” means to abolish, then righteousness has also been abolished in Mat 3:13-15:
13 Then Yeshua came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him.
14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?”
15 But Yeshua answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill [4137 pleroo] all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.

·        Also, according to Rom 8:4, the righteousness of the law is to be “fulfilled [4137 pleroo] in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”

Mat 5:18

For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle [2762 keraia] will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.

·        Cp. Luke 16:17
And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one tittle [2762 keraia] of the law to fail.

·        Strong’s:
2762. keraia, ker-ah'-yah; fem. of a presumed der. of the base of G2768; something horn-like, i.e. (spec.) the apex of a Heb. letter (fig. the least particle):--tittle.

·        Do these sound like the words of a man who knew the law was about to be abolished? If He was going to abolish the law, He could have easily said “Do not think I have come to destroy the law YET, but in a couple of years, I will abolish it.” -- [thoughts from: “Thinking About Keeping the Sabbath?” by Larry & June Acheson (http://ponderscripture.org/Sabbath.html), accessed as of 10/14/2010]

q     If we claim to be followers of the Messiah, we should walk just as He walked—

1 Joh 2:6

He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

q     Did He walk one way during His lifetime prior to His resurrection but a different way now, when living through us?—

Gal 2:20

I have been crucified with Messiah; it is no longer I who live, but Messiah lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of Yahweh, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

q     Keep commandments and faith—

Rev 14:12

Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of Yahweh and the faith of Yeshua.

q     Sin is the transgression of the law—

1 Joh 3:4

Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness [KJV: “sin is the transgression of the law”].

Compare—

Rom 3:20

Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight [justification from sin -ch], for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

Rom 7:7

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, You shall not covet.

q     With whom is the New Covenant made? The houses of Israel and Judah (Jer 31:31-34; Heb 8:8-11)

q     If you do not believe Moses’ writings, how will you believe in Messiah?—

Joh 5:47

But if you do not believe his [Moses] writings, how will you believe My words?

q     Law forever:

Psa 119:160

The entirety of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.

q     Is the law bad?—

“…the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good” (Rom 7:12).

q     Is the law against the promises of Yahweh?—

“Is the law then against the promises of Yahweh? Certainly not!” (Gal 3:21a).

q     “The law of Yahweh is perfect, converting the soul” (Psa 19:7a).

q     The law is truth and righteousness—

Psa 119:142

Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Your law is truth.

Psa 119:151

You are near, O Yahweh, and all Your commandments are truth.

Psa 119:172

My tongue shall speak of Your word, for all Your commandments are righteousness.

Isa 25:1

O Yahweh, You [are] my Elohim. I will exalt You, I will praise Your name, for You have done wonderful things; Your counsels of old are faithfulness and truth.

q     Love of Yahweh and love of neighbor, “On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets” (Mat 22:35-40)—

Comment: It all falls under love of Yahweh and love of neighbor. Why abolish it?

q     The Bible says turning your ear away from the law affects your prayers—

Pro 28:9

One who turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination.

q     “A good understanding have all those who do His commandments” (Psa 111:10b).

q     “If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments” (Mat 19:17b; cp Rev 22:14; 14:12).

q     “For not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of Yahweh, but the doers of the law will be justified” (Rom 2:13).

q     The conclusion of the whole matter—

Ecc 12:13 (KJV)

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear Elohim, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

q     “Under the law”

·        Rom 6:15
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!

·        Most of the time, the context of “under the law” refers to being under the penalty of the law – a place where all have been, for all have sinned (Rom 3:23).

·        To reject the need for the Messiah and place our salvation upon the idea that we can stand justified before our Maker based on our own merit because we have never broken the law, is to place ourselves under the penalty of the law because, in fact, we have all broken it. This in itself points out the need for the Messiah.

·        To accept the Messiah and repent from sin, which is lawlessness (1 Joh 3:4), is to acknowledge the fact that we need a Savior, that we are relying upon Him for the needed deliverance and justification, that we will live an upright life, not continuing in sin (Rom 6:1), but remaining repentant and faithful to the commands of our Creator, thus not making void the law through faith, but establishing it (Rom 3:31).

·        By the very act of repenting from sin (turning away from breaking Yahweh’s Law), we establish the law through faith (Rom 3:31).

·        To further clarify different usages of the phrase “under the law” within context, notice 1 Cor 9:21 (KJV). Here, Paul assures us that he is “…not without law to Yahweh, but under the law to Messiah…” In this case, Paul reference is not that he is under the penalty of the law, but that he is subject to upholding the law.

Law of Liberty (NIV: “law that gives freedom”)

q     Jam 1:25
But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

q     Jam 2:12
So speak and so do as those who will be judged by the law of liberty.

Law and Paul

q     Paul, in his own words, stated that we do not make void the law through faith, but we establish it (Rom 3:31).

q     Paul, in his own words, in giving testimony before Felix, stated that he believed “all things which are written in the Law and in the Prophets” (Acts 24:14).

q     Paul, in his own words, in giving testimony before Festus, stated that he had not committed any offense at all “against the law of the Jews,” which we know is really Yahweh’s law (Acts 25:8).

q     Paul, in his own words, after suffering shipwreck and being delivered to Rome, stated that he had done nothing against his people (Israel) or the customs of his fathers (Acts 28:17). The customs of Paul’s fathers, who were Israelites (Rom 9:3-6; 2 Cor 11:22), included the weekly Sabbath.

q     Paul went to great lengths to prove that he indeed believed in keeping the law, including the covenant of circumcision (Acts 21:21:24).

Paul –

To understand Paul’s writings, we have to realize the context in which they were written. In Paul’s day, the law was accepted as being valid and not done away with, but he had to contend with people rejecting the Messiah. In other words, it was Pro-Law, but Anti-Messiah. Therefore, Paul emphasized the Messiah. He also spoke highly of the law (for example, Rom 7:12: “…the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good”). In our day here in America, however, the situation is 180 degrees opposite! Most religious people accept the Messiah but reject the law as being abolished. In other words, the situation is Pro-Messiah, but Anti-Law. Reading Paul’s letters with a contextual mindset of Pro-Messiah, but Anti-Law, which is 180 degrees opposite of the prevailing point of view with which he dealt, skews the meaning of Paul’s writings. On the other hand, reading Paul’s letters with the proper historical mindset fosters an understanding of what he is saying (and what he is not saying).

Paul’s own testimony –

What did Paul, in his own words, say he believed?

  1. Rom 3:31 - Paul, in his own words, stated that we do not make void the law through faith, but we establish it.

  1. Acts 24:14 - Paul, in his own words, in giving testimony before Felix, stated that he believed “all things which are written in the Law and in the Prophets.”

  1. Acts 25:8 - Paul, in his own words, in giving testimony before Festus, stated that he had not committed any offense at all “against the law of the Jews,” which we know is really Yahweh’s law.

  1. Acts 28:17 - Paul, after suffering shipwreck and arriving at Rome, in his own words, stated that he had done nothing against his people (Israel) or the customs of his fathers. The customs of Paul’s fathers, who were Israelites (Rom 9:3-6; 2 Cor 11:22), certainly included keeping the Sabbath and the other laws.

Again, what did Paul, in his own words, say he believed? This is something we should examine, and then ask ourselves, “Am I interpreting Paul’s writings in a manner inconsistent with what he himself plainly stated that he believed?”

What is the understanding that will result in harmony of all the texts?

Paul Purified in the Temple (Acts 21:17-26).

Paul’s Writings, “…in which are some things hard to understand…” (2 Pet 3:15-16).

Peace

q     “And the peace of Yahweh, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Messiah Yeshua” (Phi 4:7).

q     “Depart from evil and do good; Seek peace and pursue it” (Psa 34:14).

q     “If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men” (Rom 12:18).

q     “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith” (Gal 6:10).

q     “Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Master” (Heb 12:14).

q     “Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear Yahweh. Honor the king” (1 Pet 2:17).

q     “Great peace have those who love Your law, and nothing causes them to stumble” (Psa 119:165).

q     “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (Joh 16:33).

q     “… lead a quiet and peaceable life in all righteousness and reverence” (1 Tim 2:2).

q     “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy” (Jam 3:17).

q     “When a man’s ways please Yahweh, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him” (Pro 16:7).

Prayer is intended to be your first priority, not your last resort. – Saying taken from an e-card in 2013.

Prayer, Ancient:

From the cowardice that shrinks from new truth,

From the laziness that is content with half-truths,

From the arrogance that thinks it knows all truth,

O (Mighty One) of Truth, deliver us.

Praying for where you are living in this world, a pattern for:

Jer 29:4-7

4 Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel, to all who were carried away captive, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem to Babylon:

5 Build houses and dwell in them; plant gardens and eat their fruit.

6 Take wives and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, so that they may bear sons and daughters; that you may be increased there, and not diminished.

7 And seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to Yahweh for it; for in its peace you will have peace.

This seems to go along with the idea of occupying until the return of the Messiah (Luke 19:13 KJV). The NKJV translates this “do business.”

“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall (Pro 16:18).

Paul states that if we seek to be justified by Messiah, we should not be living a life of sin. To do so would, in effect, make the Messiah a minister of sin, which He certainly is not.

q     “…by the law is the knowledge of sin” (Rom 3:20b; also see Rom 7:7; 1 Joh 3:4).

q     “…sin is the transgression of the law” [KJV]; “sin is lawlessness” [NKJV] (1 Joh 3:4; also see Rom 3:20b; 7:7).

q     “The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law” (1 Cor 15:56).

·        Why is the law the strength of sin? Because it defines what sin is.

·        The Amplified version explains it this way:
“Sin exercises its power [upon the soul] through [the abuse of] the Law.”

q     “… Your sin will find you out” (Num 32:23b).

q     “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of Yahweh is eternal life in Messiah Yeshua our Master” (Rom 6:23).

q     The sin process:
Jam 1:14-15
14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.
15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

Slaves of Sin or Righteousness?

Rom 6:16-18

16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?

17 But Yahweh be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.

18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.

Steps of Man Directed by Yahweh

Pro 16:9

A man’s heart plans his way, but Yahweh directs his steps.

Jer 10:23

O Yahweh, I know the way of man is not in himself; it is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.

Psa 37:23-24

23 The steps of a good man are ordered by Yahweh, and He delights in his way.

24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for Yahweh upholds him with His hand.

Pro 24:16

For a righteous man may fall seven times and rise again, but the wicked shall fall by calamity.

“… strength of sin is the law” (1 Cor 15:56).

·        Why is the law the strength of sin? Because it defines what sin is.

·        The Amplified version explains it this way:
“Sin exercises its power [upon the soul] through [the abuse of] the Law.”

Strong Delusion:

2 Thes 2:9-12

9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders,

10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

11 And for this reason Yahweh will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie,

12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Study (KJV) – “Be diligent to present yourself approved to Yahweh, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Tim 2:15 NKJV).

Study – heart of righteous:

Pro 15:28

The heart of the righteous studies how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil.

“… Such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Master Yeshua and by the Spirit of our Elohim” (1 Cor 6:11; see vv 9-11).

Sufficient for the day is its own trouble – “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” (Mat 6:34).

Temptation

q     Described (Jam 1:13-15). Note: Yahweh does not tempt.

q     Not allowed beyond what we are able (1 Cor 10:13; also see vv 12, 14).

q     Yeshua was tempted as we are (Heb 4:15; 2:18).

“…There is none righteous, no, not one” (Rom 3:10).

“… There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12b).

Think not (KJV wording)…

Mat 5:17-18

17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law [KJV]; Do not think that I came to destroy the Law [NKJV] or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.

18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.

“…this is the love of Yahweh, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome” (1 Joh 5:3).

Tongue – “Death and life are in the power of the tongue…” (Pro 18:21a).

To the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:

Rom 2:9-11

9 Tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek;

10 but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

11 For there is no partiality with Yahweh.

“To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them” (Isa 8:20).

Troubled Times and Conflict Resolution, Scriptures for—

Lev 19:17-18

17 You shall not hate your brother in your heart. You shall surely rebuke your neighbor, and not bear sin because of him.

18 You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am Yahweh.

Deu 19:15 (Witness Requirement)

One witness shall not rise against a man concerning any iniquity or any sin that he commits; by the mouth of two or three witnesses the matter shall be established.

Psa 25:19

Consider my enemies, for they are many; and they hate me with cruel hatred.

Psa 42:5

Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in the Mighty One, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance.

Psa 56:1-11

1 Be merciful to me, O Mighty One, for man would swallow me up; fighting all day he oppresses me.

2 My enemies would hound me all day, for there are many who fight against me, O Most High.

3 Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You.

4 In the Mighty One (I will praise His word), in the Mighty One I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?

5 All day they twist my words; all their thoughts are against me for evil.

6 They gather together, they hide, they mark my steps, when they lie in wait for my life.

7 Shall they escape by iniquity? In anger cast down the peoples, O Mighty One!

8 You number my wanderings; put my tears into Your bottle; are they not in Your book?

9 When I cry out to You, then my enemies will turn back; this I know, because the Mighty One is for me.

10 In the Mighty One (I will praise His word), In Yahweh (I will praise His word),

11 In the Mighty One I have put my trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?

Psa 94:19

In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul.

Psa 119:157

Many are my persecutors and my enemies, yet I do not turn from Your testimonies.

Psa 141:5

Let the righteous strike me; it shall be a kindness. And let him rebuke me; it shall be as excellent oil; let my head not refuse it. For still my prayer is against the deeds of the wicked.

Pro 11:9

The hypocrite with his mouth destroys his neighbor, but through knowledge the righteous will be delivered.

Pro 18:17

The first one to plead his cause seems right, until his neighbor comes and examines him.

Pro 24:23-25

23 These things also belong to the wise: It is not good to show partiality in judgment.

24 He who says to the wicked, You are righteous, him the people will curse; nations will abhor him.

25 But those who rebuke the wicked will have delight, and a good blessing will come upon them.

Pro 27:17

As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.

Pro 28:23

He who rebukes a man will find more favor afterward than he who flatters with the tongue.

Ecc 7:21-22

21 Also do not take to heart everything people say, lest you hear your servant cursing you.

22 For many times, also, your own heart has known that even you have cursed others.

Nah 1:7

Yahweh is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him.

Joh 14:27

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Gal 6:1-2

1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.

2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Messiah.

Eph 4:3, 26, 31-32

3 Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

26 Be angry, and do not sin: do not let the sun go down on your wrath.

31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.

32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as Yahweh in Messiah forgave you.

Phi 3:13-14

13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,

14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of Yahweh in Messiah Yeshua.

Phi 4:6-8

6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to Yahweh;

7 and the peace of Yahweh, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Messiah Yeshua.

8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy — meditate on these things.

Col 3:12-14

12 Therefore, as the elect of Yahweh, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering;

13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Messiah forgave you, so you also must do.

14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.

Heb 10:26-31

26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,

27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.

28 Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.

29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of Yahweh underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?

30 For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says Yahweh. And again, “Yahweh will judge His people.”

31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living Mighty One.

Jam 5:19-20

19 Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back,

20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.

1 Pet 3:13-17

13 And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good?

14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.

15 But sanctify Yahweh the Mighty One in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;

16 having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Messiah may be ashamed.

17 For it is better, if it is the will of Yahweh, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

1 Pet 5:6-7

6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of Yahweh, that He may exalt you in due time,

7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

Wheat and tares parable (Mat 13:24-30).

q     This is speaking of the harvest of the world, not the assembly, notice v 30:
“Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them [a reference to the judgment], but gather the wheat into my barn.”

q     Cp. 1 Cor 5:6-7 (“… a little leaven leavens the whole lump … Therefore purge out the old leaven…”).

“When a man’s ways please Yahweh, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him” (Pro 16:7).

“… whoever calls on the name of Yahweh shall be saved” (Joel 2:32; Acts 2:21).

Wife – “He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from Yahweh” (Pro 18:22).

Women in Rulership

q     “As for My people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O My people! Those who lead you cause you to err, and destroy the way of your paths” (Isa 3:12).

“…Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling” (Phi 2:12b). See also v 13: “For it is Yahweh who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.”

Work

q     “If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat” (2 Th 3:10b).

q     “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might…” (Ecc 9:10).

q     “Nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor. This also, I saw, was from the hand of Elohim” (Ecc 2:24).

q     “The fool folds his hands and consumes his own flesh” (Ecc 4:5).

q     Pro 24:33-34
33 A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to rest;
34 So shall your poverty come like a prowler, And your need like an armed man.

Works

q     Eph 2:8-10

·        v 9, “not of works”

·        v 10, “created … for good works”
“For we are His workmanship, created in Messiah Yeshua for good works, which Yahweh prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

q     Faith without works is dead (see Jam 2:17-26, esp. vv 17, 20, 26)

q     “And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear” (1 Pet 1:17).

q     “For this is the love of Yahweh, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome” (1 Joh 5:3).

q     “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work” (Rev 22:12).

q     Challenge: Harmonize the “no works” doctrine with James 2:24 —

Jam 2:24

You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.

(Answer: The context of James is post-conversion, i.e., living a faithful life after conversion. The context of Paul’s remarks regarding not being justified by works is pre-conversion, and thus he speaks of justification from sin. That is, we cannot justify ourselves from sin based on our own works.)
