1. The Public Assembly in the Tanakh

1.1. Men

1.2. Women

2. The Public Assembly in the New Testament

3. Men Ruling Over Women, or Women Ruling Over Men?

Scripture quotations are from the New King James Version (NKJV) of the Bible unless otherwise noted.

1.1. Men

In the public assembly, the men are to carry out the responsibility of teaching the Scriptures. An example of this is found in Deuteronomy 31:9-13 —

Deu 31:9-13

9 So Moses wrote this law and delivered it to the priests, the sons of Levi, who bore the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and to all the elders of Israel.

10 And Moses commanded them, saying: At the end of every seven years, at the appointed time in the year of release, at the Feast of Tabernacles,

11 when all Israel comes to appear before Yahweh your Mighty One in the place which He chooses, you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing.

12 Gather the people together, men and women and little ones, and the stranger who is within your gates, that they may hear and that they may learn to fear Yahweh your Mighty One and carefully observe all the words of this law,

13 and that their children, who have not known it, may hear and learn to fear Yahweh your Mighty One as long as you live in the land which you cross the Jordan to possess.

Aaron and his sons ministered in the priest’s office, as Yahweh commanded —

Exo 28:1

Now take Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, from among the children of Israel, that he may minister to Me as priest, Aaron and Aaron’s sons: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

1.2. Women

According to the Scriptures, women are to take part in…

  • Music

Psa 68:25-26
25 The singers went before, the players on instruments followed after; Among them were the maidens playing timbrels.
26 Bless the Mighty One in the congregations, The Master, from the fountain of Israel.

  • Verbal Worship (including singing)

Ezr 2:64-65
64 The whole assembly together was forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty,
65 besides their male and female servants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven; and they had two hundred men and women singers.

Neh 7:66-67
66 Altogether the whole assembly was forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty,
67 besides their male and female servants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven; and they had two hundred and forty-five men and women singers.

Neh 12:43
Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced, for the Mighty One had made them rejoice with great joy; the women and the children also rejoiced, so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard afar off.

·         Note: The exiles returned to Jerusalem to re-establish the temple worship. Both men and women singers are recognized.

Psa 148:7-13
7 Praise Yahweh from the earth, you great sea creatures and all the depths;
8 Fire and hail, snow and clouds; stormy wind, fulfilling His word;
9 Mountains and all hills; fruitful trees and all cedars;
10 Beasts and all cattle; creeping things and flying fowl;
11 Kings of the earth and all peoples; princes and all judges of the earth;
12 Both young men and maidens; old men and children.
13 Let them praise the name of Yahweh, for His name alone is exalted; His glory is above the earth and heaven.

Psa 150:6
Let everything that has breath praise Yahweh. Praise Yahweh!

Also cp Ecc 2:8
I also gathered for myself silver and gold and the special treasures of kings and of the provinces. I acquired male and female singers, the delights of the sons of men, and musical instruments of all kinds.

Isaiah 51:11 speaks of a time when the redeemed of Yahweh shall return, and come with singing unto Zion. This would certainly include women —

Isa 51:11

So the ransomed of Yahweh shall return, and come to Zion with singing, with everlasting joy on their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness; sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

We have no record of Yeshua offering any rebuke with how the Temple or synagogue services were conducted.

If the following Scriptures do not prohibit women doing the teaching in the assemblies, what do they prohibit?

1 Cor 14:33-37

33 For Yahweh is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the assemblies of the saints.

34 Let your women keep silent in the assemblies, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says.

35 And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in assembly.

36 Or did the word of Yahweh come originally from you? Or was it you only that it reached?

37 If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Master.

1 Tim 2:11-13

11 Let a woman learn in silence with all submission.

12 And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.

13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.

Supplemental information regarding men:

  • The 12 apostles sent out by Yeshua were all men (Mat 10:2-4). After Judas’ death, lots were cast to determine who should take his place. Although women as well as men had been in company with Yeshua, the candidates appointed were chosen from among the men. The lot fell upon Matthias (Acts 1:21-26).

  • The apostles chose men to help in the service of Acts 6:1-6.

Supplemental information regarding women:

  • The aged women are to teach the young women —

Titus 2:3-5
3 the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things —
4 that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,
5 to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of Yahweh may not be blasphemed.

Gen 3:16

To the woman He said: I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you.

Strong’s:

rule: 4910. mashal, maw-shal'; a prim. root; to rule:--(have, make to have) dominion, governor, X indeed, reign, (bear, cause to, have) rule (-ing, -r), have power.

Obviously, this rulership is not to be harsh. Ephesians 5:33 admonishes—

Eph 5:33

Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Isaiah speaks negatively of women rulers:

Isa 3:12

As for My people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O My people! Those who lead you cause you to err, and destroy the way of your paths.
