All Scripture quotations are from the New King James Version (NKJV) unless otherwise noted.

Scripture references with headings in bold red are meant to call attention to what might be considered some of the most significant verses for showing the importance of the sacred names.

18 Then Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it.

19 And he called the name of that place Bethel; but the name of that city had been Luz previously.

20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, If Elohim will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on,

21 so that I come back to my father’s house in peace, then Yahweh shall be my Elohim.

1 Ki 18:21-39 (Eliyah calls on the name of Yahweh in the contest with the prophets of Baal)

21 And Elijah came to all the people, and said, How long will you falter between two opinions? If Yahweh is the Mighty One, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him. But the people answered him not a word.

22 Then Elijah said to the people, I alone am left a prophet of Yahweh; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

23 Therefore let them give us two bulls; and let them choose one bull for themselves, cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire under it; and I will prepare the other bull, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire under it.

24 Then you call on the name of your mighty ones, and I will call on the name of Yahweh; and the mighty one who answers by fire, He is the Mighty One. So all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

25 Now Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, Choose one bull for yourselves and prepare it first, for you are many; and call on the name of your mighty one, but put no fire under it.

26 So they took the bull which was given them, and they prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even till noon, saying, O Baal, hear us! But there was no voice; no one answered. Then they leaped about the altar which they had made.

27 And so it was, at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, Cry aloud, for he is a mighty one; either he is meditating, or he is busy, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened.

28 So they cried aloud, and cut themselves, as was their custom, with knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them.

29 And when midday was past, they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice. But there was no voice; no one answered, no one paid attention.

30 Then Elijah said to all the people, Come near to me. So all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of Yahweh that was broken down.

31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of Yahweh had come, saying, Israel shall be your name.

32 Then with the stones he built an altar in the name of Yahweh; and he made a trench around the altar large enough to hold two seahs of seed.

33 And he put the wood in order, cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood, and said, Fill four waterpots with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice and on the wood.

34 Then he said, Do it a second time, and they did it a second time; and he said, Do it a third time, and they did it a third time.

35 So the water ran all around the altar; and he also filled the trench with water.

36 And it came to pass, at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near and said, Yahweh Mighty One of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are the Mighty One in Israel and I am Your servant, and that I have done all these things at Your word.

37 Hear me, O Yahweh, hear me, that this people may know that You are Yahweh the Mighty One, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again.

38 Then the fire of Yahweh fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench.

39 Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, Yahweh, He is the Mighty One! Yahweh, He is the Mighty One!

14 Thus says Yahweh: Against all My evil neighbors who touch the inheritance which I have caused My people Israel to inherit; behold, I will pluck them out of their land and pluck out the house of Judah from among them.

15 Then it shall be, after I have plucked them out, that I will return and have compassion on them and bring them back, everyone to his heritage and everyone to his land.

16 And it shall be, if they will learn carefully the ways of My people, to swear by My name, As Yahweh lives, as they taught My people to swear by Baal, then they shall be established in the midst of My people.

17 But if they do not obey, I will utterly pluck up and destroy that nation, says Yahweh.

Note: To swear by Yahweh’s name would require using it.

Jer 23:25-27

25 I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in My name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed!

26 How long will this be in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies? Indeed they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart,

27 who try to make My people forget My name by their dreams which everyone tells his neighbor, as their fathers forgot My name for Baal.

Joe 2:28-32 (also quoted by Peter in Acts 2:16-21)

28 And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions.

29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.

30 And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: Blood and fire and pillars of smoke.

31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of Yahweh.

32 And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of Yahweh shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance, as Yahweh has said, among the remnant whom Yahweh calls.

18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy.

19 I will show wonders in heaven above and signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke.

14 And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name.

19 So when he had received food, he was strengthened. Then Saul spent some days with the disciples at Damascus.

20 Immediately he preached the Messiah in the synagogues, that He is the Son of Yahweh.

Acts 22:16

And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of Yahweh.

6 But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, Do not say in your heart, Who will ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Messiah down from above)

7 or, Who will descend into the abyss? (that is, to bring Messiah up from the dead).

8 But what does it say? The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart (that is, the word of faith which we preach):

9 that if you confess with your mouth the Master Yahshua and believe in your heart that Yahweh has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

11 For the Scripture says, Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.

12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Master over all is rich to all who call upon Him.

Jer 14: 7-9

7 O Yahweh, though our iniquities testify against us, do it for Your name’s sake; for our backslidings are many, we have sinned against You.

8 O the Hope of Israel, his Savior in time of trouble, why should You be like a stranger in the land, and like a traveler who turns aside to tarry for a night?

9 Why should You be like a man astonished, like a mighty one who cannot save? Yet You, O Yahweh, are in our midst, and we are called by Your name; Do not leave us!

Dan 9:18-19

18 O my Mighty One, incline Your ear and hear; open Your eyes and see our desolations, and the city which is called by Your name; for we do not present our supplications before You because of our righteous deeds, but because of Your great mercies.

19 O Master, hear! O Master, forgive! O Master, listen and act! Do not delay for Your own sake, my Mighty One, for Your city and Your people are called by Your name.

Amo 9:11-12

11 On that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down, and repair its damages; I will raise up its ruins, and rebuild it as in the days of old;

Acts 15:13-17

13 And after they had become silent, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, listen to me:

14 Simon has declared how Yahweh at the first visited the Gentiles to take out of them a people for His name.

15 And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written:

16 After this I will return and will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down; I will rebuild its ruins, and I will set it up;

17 So that the rest of mankind may seek Yahweh, even all the Gentiles who are called by My name, says Yahweh who does all these things.

Eph 3:14-16

14 For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Master Yahshua Messiah,

15 from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,

35 When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against You, when they pray toward this place and confess Your name, and turn from their sin because You afflict them,

36 then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of Your servants, Your people Israel, that You may teach them the good way in which they should walk; and send rain on Your land which You have given to Your people as an inheritance.

2 Chr 6:24-27 (Solomon’s Prayer)

24 Or if Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have sinned against You, and return and confess Your name, and pray and make supplication before You in this temple,

25 then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of Your people Israel, and bring them back to the land which You gave to them and their fathers.

26 When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against You, when they pray toward this place and confess Your name, and turn from their sin because You afflict them,

5 Now Yahweh descended in the cloud and stood with him [Moses] there, and proclaimed the name of Yahweh.

6 And Yahweh passed before him and proclaimed, Yahweh, Yahweh [notice the emphasis] the Mighty One, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth,

7 keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.

Deu 32:1-3

1 Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.

2 Let my teaching drop as the rain, my speech distill as the dew, as raindrops on the tender herb, and as showers on the grass.

24 But My faithfulness and My mercy shall be with him, and in My name his horn shall be exalted.

I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

Psa 138:2 (NKJV)

I will worship toward Your holy temple, and praise Your name For Your lovingkindness and Your truth; for You have magnified Your word above all Your name.

First of all, if Yahweh’s name were so unimportant, why would the Psalmist go to the trouble of praising His name in the first part of the verse? Let us once again notice, he stated:

“I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name …”

The Septuagint indicates that Yahweh has exalted His name above all else—

Psa 138:2 Septuagint or LXX (Brenton’s translation)

I will worship toward thy holy temple, and give thanks to thy name, on account of thy mercy and thy truth; for thou hast magnified thy holy name above every thing.

-- The Septuagint with Apocrypha, translated by Sir Lancelot C.L. Brenton and originally published by Samuel Bagster & Sons, Ltd., London, 1851.

The Septuagint, also known as the LXX because of the approximate 70 scholars who worked on it, is a translation of the Hebrew Scriptures into Greek done by ancient Hebrew scholars around 250 BCE. This shows that the understanding of the ancient Hebrew scholars who translated the LXX for their Greek-speaking audience was that Yahweh has magnified His “holy name above every thing.”

More evidence comes by way of the Hebrew text. Green’s Interlinear states:

Evidently, this has been considered by translators of other standard, major translations which indicate not that Yahweh’s name is placed low, but the exact opposite: that it and His word are both highly exalted—

Psa 138:2 (NIV)

I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.

Psa 138:2 (RSV)

I bow down toward thy holy temple and give thanks to thy name for thy steadfast love and thy faithfulness; for thou hast exalted above everything thy name and thy word.

Even when reading this verse from the KJV and the NKJV, it depends on how it is read. If the verse is read with a comma placement as follows: “for thou has magnified they word, above all thy name,” the passage states that Yahweh has magnified His name above all.

Let us therefore realize that, although some attempt to use this verse as evidence against Yahweh’s name, the evidence shows that this passage strongly supports the importance of Yahweh’s name.

33 then hear from heaven Your dwelling place, and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to You, that all peoples of the earth may know Your name and fear You, as do Your people Israel, and that they may know that this temple which I have built is called by Your name.

7 Our fathers in Egypt did not understand Your wonders; they did not remember the multitude of Your mercies, but rebelled by the sea; the Red Sea.

8 Nevertheless He saved them for His name’s sake, that He might make His mighty power known.

9 He rebuked the Red Sea also, and it dried up; so He led them through the depths, as through the wilderness.

Eze 20:9, 14, 22, 44

9 But I acted for My name’s sake, that it should not be profaned before the Gentiles among whom they were, in whose sight I had made Myself known to them, to bring them out of the land of Egypt.

14 But I acted for My name’s sake, that it should not be profaned before the Gentiles, in whose sight I had brought them out.

22 Nevertheless I withdrew My hand and acted for My name’s sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the Gentiles, in whose sight I had brought them out.

44 Then you shall know that I am Yahweh, when I have dealt with you for My name’s sake, not according to your wicked ways nor according to your corrupt doings, O house of Israel, says the Master Yahweh.

Acts 9:13-16, 26-27

13 Then Ananias answered, Master, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem.

14 And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name.

15 But the Master said to him, Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel.

16 For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake.

26 And when Saul had come to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, and did not believe that he was a disciple.

27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. And he declared to them how he had seen the Master on the road, and that He had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Yahshua.

Acts 21:13

Then Paul answered, What do you mean by weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Master Yahshua.

I write to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake.

3 Joh 1:5-7

5 Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the brethren and for strangers,

6 who have borne witness of your love before the assembly. If you send them forward on their journey in a manner worthy of Yahweh, you will do well,

7 because they went forth for His name’s sake, taking nothing from the Gentiles.

Rev 2:2-3

2 I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars;

3 and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary.

Deu 18:18-22 (A Prophet like unto Moses)

18 I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him.

19 And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him.

20 But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other mighty ones, that prophet shall die.

21 And if you say in your heart, How shall we know the word which Yahweh has not spoken?;

22 when a prophet speaks in the name of Yahweh, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which Yahweh has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.

1 Ki 22:15-18 (The prophet Micaiah before King Ahab)

15 Then he came to the king; and the king said to him, Micaiah, shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall we refrain? And he answered him, Go and prosper, for Yahweh will deliver it into the hand of the king!

16 So the king said to him, How many times shall I make you swear that you tell me nothing but the truth in the name of Yahweh?

17 Then he said, I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd. And Yahweh said, These have no master. Let each return to his house in peace.

18 And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, Did I not tell you he would not prophesy good concerning me, but evil?

Jer 20:9

Then I said, I will not make mention of Him, nor speak anymore in His name. But His word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, and I could not.

Jer 26:8-9, 16

8 Now it happened, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that Yahweh had commanded him to speak to all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people seized him, saying, You will surely die!

9 Why have you prophesied in the name of Yahweh, saying, This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, without an inhabitant? And all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the house of Yahweh.

16 So the princes and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, This man does not deserve to die. For he has spoken to us in the name of Yahweh our Mighty One.

Jer 29:8-9, 20-23

8 For thus says Yahweh of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are in your midst deceive you, nor listen to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed.

9 For they prophesy falsely to you in My name; I have not sent them, says Yahweh.

20 Therefore hear the word of Yahweh, all you of the captivity, whom I have sent from Jerusalem to Babylon.

21 Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel, concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who prophesy a lie to you in My name: Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he shall slay them before your eyes.

22 And because of them a curse shall be taken up by all the captivity of Judah who are in Babylon, saying, Yahweh make you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;

23 because they have done disgraceful things in Israel, have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives, and have spoken lying words in My name, which I have not commanded them. Indeed I know, and am a witness, says Yahweh.

Jer 44:16-17, 24-26

16 As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of Yahweh, we will not listen to you!

17 But we will certainly do whatever has gone out of our own mouth, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of food, were well-off, and saw no trouble.

24 Moreover Jeremiah said to all the people and to all the women, Hear the word of Yahweh, all Judah who are in the land of Egypt!

25 Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel, saying: You and your wives have spoken with your mouths and fulfilled with your hands, saying, We will surely keep our vows that we have made, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her. You will surely keep your vows and perform your vows!

26 Therefore hear the word of Yahweh, all Judah who dwell in the land of Egypt: Behold, I have sworn by My great name, says Yahweh, that My name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, The Master Yahweh lives.

Luke 24:46-48

46 Then He said to them, Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Messiah to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day,

47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

48 And you are witnesses of these things.

Acts 4:13-20

13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Yahshua.

14 And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.

15 But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,

16 saying, What shall we do to these men? For, indeed, that a notable miracle has been done through them is evident to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.

17 But so that it spreads no further among the people, let us severely threaten them, that from now on they speak to no man in this name.

18 And they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Yahshua.

19 But Peter and John answered and said to them, Whether it is right in the sight of Yahweh to listen to you more than to Yahweh, you judge.

20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.

Acts 5:27-29, 34, 38-42

27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them,

28 saying, Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man’s blood on us!

29 But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: We ought to obey Yahweh rather than men.

34 Then one in the council stood up, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in respect by all the people, and commanded them to put the apostles outside for a little while.

38 And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing;

39 but if it is of Yahweh, you cannot overthrow it; lest you even be found to fight against Yahweh.

40 And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Yahshua, and let them go.

41 So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name.

42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Yahshua as the Messiah.

Acts 9:27

But Barnabas took him [Saul, or Paul] and brought him to the apostles. And he declared to them how he had seen the Master on the road, and that He had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Yahshua.

21 And in His name Gentiles will trust.
