Gen 6:1-8

1 Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them,

2 that the sons of Elohim saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.

3 And Yahweh said, My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.

4 There were giants [H5303 nephiyl (pl. nephilim)] on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of Elohim came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men [H120 adam] who were of old, men [H582 enowsh] of renown.

5 Then Yahweh saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

6 And Yahweh was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.

7 So Yahweh said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.

8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of Yahweh.

Introduction

A common belief is that the sons of Elohim are bad angels who came down and had sexual relations with human women and thus produced giants (Heb. Nephilim).

An example of this doctrine is shown in the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ publication You Can Live Forever in Paradise on Earth:

The angelic sons of God noticed the daughters of men … Yes, the angels put on fleshly bodies. Then they came to earth to have sexual relations with beautiful women. But such love affairs were wrong for angels.

-- You Can Live Forever in Paradise on Earth, Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, Brooklyn, 1982, pp. 92-93.

Does this doctrine balance with the whole of Scripture?

Took for Themselves Wives (?)

Please notice, not only are these beings allegedly angels who came down and had sex with humans, the text states that they took wives. This is in direct contradiction to Messiah’s words:

Mat 22:23-30

23 The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and asked Him,

24 saying: Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.

25 Now there were with us seven brothers. The first died after he had married, and having no offspring, left his wife to his brother.

26 Likewise the second also, and the third, even to the seventh.

27 Last of all the woman died also.

28 Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.

29 Yeshua answered and said to them, You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of Yahweh.

30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of Yahweh in heaven.

This account is also recorded in: Mark 12:18-25 and Luke 20:27-36.

Because the beings mentioned in Genesis 6 took wives, this disqualifies them from being angels.

The Kind-after-Kind Principle Established at Creation

In conjunction with the above, the idea that bad angels procreated with human women and produced giants defies the kind-after-kind principle established at Creation and mentioned several times in Genesis 1.

Gen 1:20-25

20 Then Elohim said, Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.

21 So Elohim created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And Elohim saw that it was good.

22 And Elohim blessed them, saying, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.

23 So the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

24 Then Elohim said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind; and it was so.

25 And Elohim made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And Elohim saw that it was good.

When Elohim commanded Adam and Eve, “Be fruitful and multiply” (Gen 1:28), they also brought forth after their kind; their offspring were human beings, such as, Cain and Abel.

Back in Genesis 6:4, in the phrase “Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown”:

1)      The first occurrence of the word “men” is translated from the Hebrew adam (“a human being”).*

2)      The second occurrence of the word “men” is translated from enowsh (“a mortal”).*

* Strong’s Dictionary

This reveals that the offspring of the “sons of Elohim” and “the daughters of men” were mortal human beings, or mankind, thus providing further evidence that the parents were also mere mortals on the basis of kind reproducing after kind.

What then, is the meaning of the “the sons of Elohim saw the daughters of men,” etc.?

I submit that it simply means that righteous men of Yahweh were lured away by the beauty of wicked women of the world (“daughters of men,” as opposed to “daughters of Yahweh”). The consequences of this were grave—

Gen 6:5

Then Yahweh saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Israel was later warned about intermarrying with those who would turn their heart away from Yahweh—

Deu 7:3-4

3 Nor shall you make marriages with them. You shall not give your daughter to their son, nor take their daughter for your son.

4 For they will turn your sons away from following Me, to serve other elohim; so the anger of Yahweh will be aroused against you and destroy you suddenly.

Yahweh warned that His anger would be aroused and He would destroy them. Strikingly, the same response to the same root problem (intermarrying with the wicked) is described in Genesis 6—

Gen 6:6-7

6 And Yahweh was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.

7 So Yahweh said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.

The Jamieson, Fausset & Brown Commentary on Genesis 6:2 offers some interesting thoughts as to the peoples specifically involved, as well as providing insight about “Mixed marriages between parties of opposite principles …” —

2. the sons of God saw the daughters of men—By the former is meant the family of Seth, who were professedly religious; by the latter, the descendants of apostate Cain. Mixed marriages between parties of opposite principles and practice were necessarily sources of extensive corruption. The women, religious themselves, would as wives and mothers exert an influence fatal to the existence of religion in their household, and consequently the people of that later age sank to the lowest depravity.
